In the 1950’s, they receive a Trade Industry Award, recognizing their quality craftmanship. During the Race Bike Boom (1965–1975) Canada began importing a substantial number of bicycles from Europe and Japan, putting pressure on local manufactures. To deal with this influx, the government elected to impose a 25% import tariff in the early 1970’s on fully assembled bicycles coming into the country. To circumvent the import tax, Sekine began building frames & assembling bicycles in Rivers Manitoba with Japanese-made parts. While other foreign companies did the same (e.g., Raleigh & Peugeot), the Rivers’ Sekine factory only lasted seven years, and closed down in 1980.
