  • AuthorROBERT NEILL

THIS BOOK, TRAITOR’S MOON BY ROBERT NEILL, WAS PUBLISHED BY DOUBLEDAY & COMPANY IN 1952. Synopsis: England--1679--Charles II reigns, the Restoration is in sway, but the country bristles with unrest. The air is rife with rumors of plots and counterplots designed for seizing sudden power. In London no priest is safe from the hangman's noose as unruly mobs, spurred on by Titus Oates' revelations of a popish conspiracy, roam the streets seeking out all adherents to the papacy. These are times when a strong devotion to almost any principle or party is difficult--and dangerous. Young John Leyburne, journeyman clockmaker and by both birth and mien a gentleman, is no papist, even though many of his family and friends in the North Country are. Loyal to the Crown, he is nonetheless outraged by the wanton attacks against the priests. It is his meeting with Penelope Langley, the excitingly beautiful daughter of a staunch Lancashire family, that stirs him into vigorous defense of that harassed group. Within the day John's sword has drawn the blood of Colonel Mansell, a scheming Whig and bully who, unknown to John, is a rival suitor for Penelope's hand. Within the week John lies hopelessly inside the walls of Newgate Prison, the scaffold ominously near. But within the month, thanks to the intricate maneuvers of new-found friends, John is hastening northward to the Langley estate, where his contest with Mansell is continued. IT IS 308 PAGES IN LENGTH AND IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION HAVING BEEN READ PROBABLY ONCE OR NOT AT ALL. OTHER BOOKS ARE AVAILABLE.
